Joseph Simons by David Kawena - 02 by davidkawena Joseph Simons by David Kawena - 02 by davidkawena
Shot at the underground docks of the Grand Central Terminal in NY, this is one of my personal favourite off my latest photoshoot, featuring Australian dancer / choreographer Joseph Simons.
It was incredible heaving the permission to walk around the place with our equipments and bags, doing quick outfit and locations change. It felt extremely exciting and new, and I was blessed to have such a great people to work with to help me bring my vision to life.

Hope you'll enjoy this shot and rest of the shoot to follow.

The angle chosen for the scene captures both the underground setting and the model's pose completely; his stance is held very well, and yet does not look laboured. The raised arm is find is very commanding, and I wonder what the impact would be if more shots were taken where the model's back is more arched, or even without the hand supporting him on the rail.
The choice of facial expression is similarly captivating, and the shadows across the legs and torso highlight the muscles perfectly. My only criticism would be that the necklace piece is slightly lost due to the movement of the background tram and I feel some of the flowers on the crown blend with the hair too much, due to the black and white style photo choice.
But overall a wonderful photo that exudes both power and grace.

Oh wow, this gets your attention. When you see it, you can't just NOT stop and stare at it.

The fierce expression + the fluffy thing on his head just make it priceless.

The angle of the person makes a great impact, that was a cool way to make it look like he's going all Matrix on you, but the necklace gives away the fact he's not really moving.

I would have done something more creative with the costume/shorts.

I think it would have added a bit to the picture if the person with the camera didn't just stand at the top of the stairs; an upward angle would have looked great, or have the stairs perfectly lined up into a perspective effect, etc. This dude's putting a lot of effort into the pose so I think it would have been better for the photographer to also put in a bit of dramatic effort along with him.

There also appears to be no particular reason for him to be doing... whatever he's doing, which makes it interesting because it's so amazingly random, but I think that would have added a bit to the picture if there was some point. He looks like a scene from a sci-fi action movie but is dressed like a Greek/Biblical character, and it makes no sense at all. If randomness itself was the point, I'd have gone all out with it and made it as random as possible, somebody wearing a chicken suit in the background or something, etc. He needs some dudes back there shooting at him, and a cape.

But overall, good job you guys. :meow:

Very good work, love it! Technically fabulous, especially for a cellphone selfie ( :giggle: ) and timed perfectly too. And I'd work with that model any day :D :D

I love the composition of the photo as well as the model.  You can see the athleticism and strength of the model. The 'au natural' of the model is also a vivid contrast to the harsh environment of the background. Lovely.

Wow this guy could easily be one of your drawings!

Hope you didn't get into much trouble there, or maybe the area where you worked wasn't as populated?

Hey -
We didn't get into trouble as we had the authority to have the photoshoot done there. I had to go through all the proper process of filing a request, presenting myself and my project, and we were lucky enough to be granted with a half day of shooting time. It was absolute pleasure and honour to be able to achieve that.

I'll be sure to pass your compliments to Joseph as well.
